Sustainable Huron launches two early win projects!

Sustainable Huron is now accepting applications for two early win projects:

  • The Manufacturing Efficiencies Project, and
  • The Schoolyard Planting Project.

The Manufacturing Efficiencies Project

This project, developed in partnership with Huron County’s Sustainable Huron Plan, the HMA and the Midwestern Green Jobs Strategy, provides the opportunity for manufacturers to receive free professional guidance on integrating cost-effective sustainable solutions, such as identifying eco and energy efficiencies. Selected companies will receive free consultation with a sustainable business expert, as well as a sustainable business toolkit equipped with the tools and tips for increasing efficiencies, reducing environmental impact and contributing to the local community, all while striving to reduce overall costs!

Companies are asked to submit their applications of interest by Thursday, March 31, 2011.

The Schoolyard Planting Project

The Planting Project will focus on creating new beauty and function in three of Huron‟s elementary school grounds. This project will involve the development of stimulating school landscape designs that feature native species. Grade 6 classes will be invited to participate in the landscape design process and will work collaboratively with a landscape architect to prepare designs for the outdoor classrooms. The designs will involve the planting of more than 105 trees and shrubs among other local species. In addition, the classes participating will receive a presentation courtesy of our local conservation authorities (MVCA and ABCA) about sustainability, the importance of native species in our environment, and how to plant and maintain the trees.

Schools are asked to submit their application form by March 4, 2011.
